Network Maintenance: Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 04:00-06:00 UTC/GMT
On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice.

Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials.

We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait!

As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work.

Asus EE PC - $150
Selling computer stuff again, this time a netbook. I don't have a picture on me at the moment, but it looks like this:

It has 4 (or, cant remember ) 8GB of HD space
512 MB RAM

It comes with a charger, power cable, and all my files will be deleted and a new account made if you want it before you get it.

Feel free to email me @ Videlcoolgirl@gmail.com if you're interested, or post here too. I work on campus, so it should be fairly easy to meet. You can even test it.

I also have PC computer parts available.

2 - 1GB sticks RAM - $30 Each
1 Dual Monitor Stick
- $35 ( You have to open your box for this, and put it in manually. So you can have two screens instead of one)

November 11th, 2009: Here is some exciting news that Laura the Zoologist sent to me! Do you have something gross lying around your house? Of course you do. Well, it turns out that you can now get a free scanning electron micrograph of ANYTHING. Fill out a form, send in your object sample, and they'll post the result on their site!

Guys we all have to do this!

November 10th, 2009: In yesterday's comic T-Rex and Utahraptor talked about self-charging mp3 players (before everyone died) (quite a bit before everyone died). Utahraptor said "There are physical limits to what a -" before he was interrupted by T-Rex. If he'd been allowed to continue he would have said "There are physical limits to what a device such as that can do, and it wouldn't be enough, as I said earlier - assuming of course that the person lives a sedate lifestyle and barely uses their legs."

I say this because it turns out that people are ALREADY working on T-Rex's invention! In fact, they're such great people that they started working on it even before he invented it, and that's really something. Thank you everyone who sent me links to this Science Daily article and this NPR story. I even got some emails from researchers working on this very problem, which was kind of crazy, because I hadn't expected that! It made me think that if I'd written a comic about how you can converse in English with your dogs now instead, we'd all be waking up today to a world where, come Christmas 2009, a Dog Talker will be on the top of everyone's list!

Anyway that sounds pretty good to me!

UPDATE: Guys it turns out that dog translators exist, I am going to think really hard about what my third invention will be before posting it here; I don't want to waste it.

UPDATE 2: Okay the idea of using breasts as a power source was just a stray thought, I didn't mean for it to come true! I need to get a handle on controlling this new-found power.

I'm an uncle!
Grant Morrison pitches Steven Fry project to the Beeb. That's awesome?

"Kill Shakespeare is a new series from IDW by Anthony Del Col, Conor McCreery and Andy Belanger that’s kind of like a cross between Fables and League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. And Shakespeare. In which Hamlet, Romeo, Juliet, Othello and Falstaff have to team up to beat Richard III, Iago and Lady Macbeth."

War of the Worlds, as read by various Star Trek alumni. Grand.

I was just watching The Wizard of Oz, thinking about how I'd like a recreation of the art on the side of Professor Marvel's wagon, when the internet came up to me and said, "pifft, that already exists!"

I'm not very far in Brutal Mario so far, but it's quite the hack. Mostly it has reminded me how long it's been since I played Super Mario World.

Small Worlds is a very atmospheric, very beautiful, short flash game, well worth your minutes. It's hard to explain, but you'll see.

I dig the style of Rocketbirds: Evolution! The price is a little much for a flash game, but It's something I'd think about if it was on sale. Free demo here.

Rocketbirds:Revolution! from Ratloop on Vimeo.

Did you forget to play Psychonauts? PLAY PSYCHONAUTS.

I don't care what anyone thinks, I love clever business cards. So much.

This giant "bobble-head mode" costume is the most frightening bit of Halloween I've seen. Like, this is the sort of thing I see in my nightmares, when my nightmares are directed by Michel Gondry.

A Common Nomenclature for the stranger LEGO pieces.

An experiment on a question I wondered about when I first started watching anime in the 90s: Do viewers perceive the intended race, or impose their own?

Uwe Boll to make a film about the genocide in Darfur. I have no words.

A dainty little murder ballad, in comic form, via [info]r_dart.

I too, was unaware that Shaft was a literary character first. Written by a white guy, no less. Although why they never adapted "Shaft Among The Jews" (1973) to the big screen, I'll never understand.

Tintin, as drawn by a great many comics creators, including Bryan Lee O'Malley, Eddie Campbell, Chris Onstad, and Kate Beaton.

There's some interesting RPG-ish developments recently, such as the impressive multi-touch table and using Google Wave as a sounding board. The table seems interesting, although it still requires a lot of prep time on the DM's part (although I've considered using an extra flatscreen monitor to display relevant graphics), and Wave looks very promising, as I've been using Docs to do collaborations for nearly a year. Still, there's always healthy debate on what it'll do to the RP part of RPGs. Also, I really want to try Savage Worlds sometime.

A tone of videos, under the cut... )

November 6th, 2009: I mentioned I like out-of-genre cover songs and you guys sent me so many out of genre cover songs! THIS IS EXCELLENT. I also like money and solid gold cars you guys!

Here's some of the cream of the crop! The Baseballs do 50-style covers of modern music, and Umbrella has a great video to go with it.. It's a window into a universe where rock and roll never stopped rockin' and rollin'!

Kate Nash has done a few of these (and she's got a great voice!), Hollaback Girl is one of my favourites. Amanda Palmer does Creep on the ukulele, and here's Karen Souza doing a sexy lounge version of the same. And I've linked to her before, but fellow Torontoian Kay Pettigrew's cover of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme is totally rad.

With more irony we've got Jenny Owen Youngs doing "Hot in Herre", and you're probably already familiar with Alanis doing My Humps, Mat Weddle doing Hey Yah, and The BossHoss who do pop music "in the original country and western" and who I've even seen live! How about we go with I Say A Little Prayer from them.

Anyway hooray for music that sounds like other music!

LiveJournal Major Notes: Spam counter-attack, RSS feeds again, CSI Deadly Intent contest

The empire strikes back

In recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.

RSS feeds again

If you're addicted to [info]xkcd_rss, [info]icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.

November 5th, 2009: I think I have a "thing", and this "thing" is for hip young women singing out-of-genre covers of pop songs with a pure sincerity that completely transcends irony. Enjoy Molly Lewis doing Poker Face and Pomplamoose doing September. Enjoy them knowing that I just listen to them back to back, one after the other, over and over again!

SYNCHRONIZE OUR ANSWERS!

There is a 2010 graduation ceremony survey out. If you don't have any better ideas for how to respond, and would otherwise leave a question blank, why not put one of these?

Bill Cosby: because that would be awesome.

Zombies vs Pirates vs Ninjas vs Vampires: Think about it. Best graduation ever.

Counterpoint Journal: they're a cool idea. Or we could just do the organic farm again...

Every Grad Having To option To Bring An Instrument: such a theme could be very cool. a big procession of graduates and music....

November 2nd, 2009: I took a flight down to NY this weekend (TO PARTY!!!) and on the flight back we were delayed several hours because the President was landing at same airport we were at and so nobody else was allowed to use any planes. You guys, this was probably the closest I've ever physically been to President Obama! Was he also saying "Wow, you guys, this is probably the closest I've ever been to Canadian cartoonist Ryan North"? He was certainly not; there is no possible way he was saying that; we are all allowed to dream but that is the most ridiculous dream imaginable and you should feel ashamed.

One time, I almost took off my head with a solar laser. While ASLEEP.
As an asthmatic kid, I use to do things like the mile run, then have my lungs painfully constrict for a few hours. For years, I thought I had outgrown this, but it turns out I just stopped doing that much physical effort. Who knew?

Also, it turns out that if you're in a small space with recycled air and hundreds of diseased middle schoolers, you can get very stick, very fast.

Time Travel Through the Brain: Not about what I thought at first, but cool nonetheless.

What do Stormtroopers do on their day off? Go on fun adventures, apparently.

Superman, as we all know, was send to Earth from the far future, by his father, the last survivor of the dying world. Almost.

Saxon Hale is a man's man's mans man!

These are some sweet Steampunk Star Wars cosplays.

I've seen a ton of scans from this Anatomy of Japanese Folk Monsters book floating around the internet.

Science has discovered Bees That Drink Human Tears. Because apparently I was mistaken, and nature wasn't full of nightmare-fueled monstrosities.

A great infographic of Earth's hardest places to reach. It's nice to know there's still a few places that no one has ever ventured.

Some great pictures of abandoned sets from The Wire surfaced on [info]abandonedplaces. I find them even more disquieting than most abandoned photos, given the sense of familiarity and detail.

In late 98', a sequel to Tron, Rise of the Virals, was commissioned. Never happened, but a soundtrack was commissioned, and it's available for download. You may have heard that Daft Punk is doing the soundtrack for the new Tron Legacy, and it's interesting to see another possible direction.

THE LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER from THE LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER team on Vimeo.

Behold the Happiness Hat! It can tell if you are smiling, and punishes you if you are not! With spikes!

happiness hat from Lauren McCarthy on Vimeo.

These clips from a fan-made Doctor Who anime rock my socks. I think the two mesh exceptionally well, although I'm not a huge fan of the stock anime girl sidekick. There's three clips total, available at the link.

I don't know what's going on here, but I totally buy that Klingon's have military children's choirs.

Network Maintenance - Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 04:00-05:00 GMT/UTC
EDIT: If you're reading this, our maintenance is OVER! The problem was not found on our equipment, which means we'll have to work with our ISP to fix this small problem -- which also means another maintenance window in the future -- but at least we have eliminated our side.

Thank you everyone, and a special shout out to [info]rekoil for giving me a great suggestion AND also the opportunity to feel like I've just called in to a local radio station.

Have a great day, night or afternoon wherever you may be.

---

Hi everyone, sorry for the late notice but I'm going to have to do some testing on 1 of our 4 internet circuits TONIGHT; Friday night or Saturday morning depending on which time zone you're in.

Most of us shouldn't notice any impact, though there may be some slowness or lag when I switch traffic on to our other ISP circuits and then another hit when I stop the tests. If a page won't load or times out, try hitting refresh 1 or 2 times and it should load then. If it doesn't work at all... trust me, I'll be typing really really really fast to try to undo whatever I just did. Hopefully you'll have some Halloween candy (if you're in the USA and celebrate that kind of thing) nearby to take away the bitterness of a small site outage. :(

Here's the handy-dandy Website That I Always Use to get a feel for when the maintenance will start in your area. Our site traffic historically dips on Friday afternoons until Saturday morning which is why we tend to pick this time for maintenance work.

tech details )

status.livejournal.org will, of course be updated before and after the maintenance window. Or else [info]marta will get mad at me. :D
